About Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a small country, but it is well worth studying. It has no army, but does maintain a civil guard. It is a democracy, with honest presidential elections, a high percentage of home ownership and a relatively large middle class. Therefore, it is perhaps the most stable nation in Central America.

This nation, the size of West Virginia, is said to have more space per person preserved as national parks and reserves than any other country in the world. One of its most famous, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, was extensively described in the January, 1983 issue of National Geographic, and shown on U.S. public television. Costa Rica is the site of the fledgling United Nations University for Peace. The country’s former president, Óscar Arias, has played a major role in the Central American peace process, an effort that gained him the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize.

About Costa Rica Study Tours

Roy Joe and Ruth Stuckey founded the Costa Rica Study Tours as a family venture with the support of their son Joe Stuckey, and his wife Jean. The Stuckey family’s involvement with Costa Rica began over 40 years ago, in 1957, when Roy Joe and Ruth first visited Ruth’s sister and her husband who were original settlers in Monteverde. Since that time, they have regularly returned. Joe and Jean settled on a dairy farm in Monteverde in 1980. In 1984, Roy Joe and Ruth led their first organized Study Tour. 5 years later, at the age of 12, Joe and Jean’s daughter Sarah began to play an active role as an apprentice tour guide. As a result of these formative experiences, Sarah pursued her interests and earned a college degree in tourism, with honors. Together with her husband Carlos, Sarah purchased the business, and assumed full leadership of this Stuckey family venture.
